Derek Jones


With nearly four decades as a full-time fitness professional, Derek has trained everyone from the general population to collegiate and professional athletes. Derek's fitness programs are tailored to meet the specific goals, expectations and unique lifestyle challenges of each client. As a baby boomer himself, Derek is keenly aware of the needs and challenges of the aging population.


Derek received some of his formal training from arguably the world's greatest fitness trainer; internationally acclaimed fitness and movement coach Pat Etcheberry. Pat has trained global athletic icons, Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi, and numerous top athletes across many other sports including the NBA, NHL, PGA, LPGA, and MLB. Derek combines many of Pat's fitness techniques with his own to deliver a customized approach to each client.


Derek's personal coach and mentor was Robert "Bobby" Johnson, Jr. who was the coach of U.S. Open and Wimbledon champions Arthur Ashe and Althea Gibson.

Derek's Philosophy: 


I believe in “old-school” hard work fused with new exercise science. I do not believe in quick diets and exercise trends. It takes hard work, dedication, determination, and motivation to achieve your health and fitness goals. Navigating life is a daily athletic event. We push, pull, twist and turn. So you have to be prepared for this daily challenge.

Derek is a very professional and experienced trainer with the ability to work with all types of clients, from those just starting their fitness journey, to seasoned athletes. His workouts are fun, challenging, and much tailored to your specific needs. I never did the same workout twice in almost a year of training and he has many ways to modify exercises to become more or less challenging as per your fitness level. He does a great job of pushing you out of your comfort zone while being very in tune to if you need a break. I highly recommend him and have seen great results while working out with him.

I joined a big Box gym several years ago and hated every second of it. I felt like I was at a meat market and was thus very intimidated. My daughter secretly purchased ten sessions with a personal trainer for me at Fit Factor Gym. Not being a work out person I flatly refused her generous offer. Reluctantly going for my consultation, I consented to begin my "adventure". Now I love it!  I'm in my mid 60s and now I can do things I haven't been able to do in years due to increased flexibility, agility and strength.  Derek, my personal trainer, pushes me hard but gently. He is a kind soul with a great sense of humor. I have been working out in some form or fashion for over 40 years, but I have never enjoyed training as much as I have since starting personalized sessions at Fit Factor with Derek Jones. Derek is extremely knowledgeable and professional. He customizes each session such that no two workouts are the same. Each one is fresh and unpredictable. Derek is sensitive to my strengths, weaknesses and prior injuries. He encourages and motivates. He explains the science behind each exercise. He selects exercises in which the dominant side cannot make up for the weaker side. And he puts a lot of focus on the core, balance and flexibility, all of which are extremely important for life’s daily activities, particularly as we age. Fit Factor provides a great environment for my training sessions with Derek. It is intimate and clean with state-of-the-art equipment. And there are rarely more than one or two other people training at the same time. Needless to say, I am a committed and enthusiastic client of Derek and Fit Factor. I can honestly say that I feel as fit at 59 as I was at 29, and I highly recommend Derek to anyone who values their fitness and health.
